The Guang Rong — Mission Complete
Published on: 03/02/2026
One year after grounding off the Tuscan coast, the Guang Rong case has now reached its final close-out. The wreck removal operation was successfully completed last year, and late January the vessel was sold to buyers following a short drydock period in Livorno.
On 28 January 2025, the cargo vessel Guang Rong was pushed by severe weather into the pier at Marina di Massa. The ship became stuck on the sandy seabed, impacting a beloved seaside town and posing significant challenges for local authorities and the community. Thankfully, all crew members were safely evacuated with no injuries.
In the months that followed, what began as monitoring and safety measures evolved into a full wreck-removal operation, with the Port Authority, Coast Guard, Environmental Agencies, marine consultants Waves Group Ltd and salvage specialists from Fratelli Neri S.p.A. & BlueTack. working together to safely remove the vessel.
What made the Emergency Response & Wreck Removal operation a success?
➡️ Over 100 tonnes of fuel and lubricants were safely removed from the vessel’s tanks during the early response phase, preventing environmental pollution
➡️ 9,000 tonnes of cargo were safely removed and transferred ashore
The vessel was stabilised, prepared, and refloated after months of careful planning and engineering
➡️ On 15 December 2025, Guang Rong was successfully refloated and towed away from the pier — exactly as planned
➡️ Final site clearance and debris removal were completed to the satisfaction of all stakeholders
Mayor Francesco Persiani welcomed the achievement, calling it “a milestone for the territory” and a sign of positive progress for the local community and economy.
A big thank-you to every professional involved — from coastguard crews and environmental monitors to technical specialists — for delivering this project safely, efficiently, and with full respect for the coast and the people who depend on it.
